Huge warehouse fire sends smoke over west London PDF Print E-mail

A large fire has sent smoke over west London as 75 firefighters try to extinguish the blaze at a range of industrial units.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said 15 fire engines were at the scene in Shepherds Bush. The fire has now been contained.

White City Tube station and Wood Lane were closed after the blaze started at 09:35 GMT.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the nearby BBC White City complex.

A section of the A40 was closed earlier but has now reopened.

An LFB spokesman said the estimated total size of the warehouses was 170m by 90m (557ft by 295ft) and 50% had been on fire.

Firms 'ill prepared for IT failure' PDF Print E-mail

Almost three-quarters of firms and public sector organisations across nine European countries may not fully recover their computer systems or data after an IT failure, a survey suggests.

The report by IT group EMC said 74% were "not very confident" they could fully restore their networks.

It also found that 54% admitted they had lost data or suffered systems downtime in the past 12 months.

A total 1,750 IT bosses in countries including the UK were questioned.

The other countries covered in the survey were Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Russia.

EMC said firms needed to put more focus on backup and recovery systems.

Its report found that the most common cause of data loss and downtime was hardware failure, followed by power outage and software malfunction.

Toyota seeks to boost production by 20% PDF Print E-mail

Toyota has said it plans to increase production by 20% next year as it tries to recover ground lost due to March's earthquake in Japan and the recent floods in Thailand.

The company aims to produce 8.48 million vehicles in 2012, and increase sales by a quarter to 8.65 million.

Toyota is due to lose its crown as the world's biggest carmaker this year to the US's General Motors (GM).

Earlier this month, the carmaker halved its profit forecast for this year. It now expects a net profit of 180bn yen ($2.3bn; £1.5bn) for the year ending 31 March 2012, compared with its previous forecast of 390bn made in August.

Icelandic volcano could cause severe flooding scientist warns PDF Print E-mail

Hundreds of metres under one of Iceland's largest glaciers there are signs of an imminent volcanic eruption that could be one of the most powerful the country has seen in almost a century.

Mighty Katla, with its 10km-wide crater, has the potential to cause catastrophic flooding as it melts the frozen surface of its caldera and sends billions of gallons of water surging through the east coast and into the Atlantic ocean.

Travel Alert Update: UK Public Sector Industrial Action PDF Print E-mail

UK Border Agency (UKBA) staff will be involved in the public sector strike on Wednesday 30 November 2011.

The management of UK Border Agency will do everything they can to minimise disruption for passengers travelling to the UK whilst ensuring that the UK Border remains secure.

However, the British Airport Authority (BAA) warns that the strike could cause delays of up to 12 hours at London Heathrow.

Until today, most airlines insist they will continue to operate normal services throughout Wednesday, despite warnings of the BAA that airports could grind to standstill.

Travellers are advised to check their flight status prior to travelling to the airport.

Hacked Security Firm Closes Its Doors PDF Print E-mail

Dutch security firm DigiNotar has filed for voluntary bankruptcy following a series of attacks by a hacker.

The attackers penetrated DigiNotar's internal systems and then issued fake security certificates so they could impersonate web firms. The certificates are believed to have been used to eavesdrop on the Google email accounts of about 300,000 people.

The hacker behind the attacks claims to have penetrated four other firms that issue security certificates.

JD Sports Fashion has put a cost on the amount of stock that was looted during August's riots.

The retailer believes stock worth £700,000 was taken from 16 stores with 6 in London worst affected.

Shops in Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham were also targeted and all those attacked have since re-opened, bar one store in Woolwich which suffered fire damage.

The company says if it wasn't for the actions of its staff, the losses would have been greater and it is still working with insurers to recover stock theft, repair costs and business interruption
